What is The Entourage Effect?
This article will explain what the entourage effect is, and why it is important for consumers of CBD (cannabidiol) to understand the potential benefits of the entourage effect.
Cannabis is a plant that has been used medicinally and therapeutically for centuries. Science has just begun to scratch the surface of the potential health benefits of using CBD (Cannabidiol, which is a compound in cannabis plants that produces benefits, without any of the psychoactive effects).
Most people in this day and age are familiar with THC and CBD, however, research investigating the interactive effects of the hundreds of other therapeutic compounds found in cannabis buds suggests that THC and CBD may not always be sufficient on their own.
In addition to the vast range of compounds found it Cannabis, Terpenes are particularly important because they produced heightened effects when combined with other properties of Cannabis. Terpenes are an oil that can be found in the buds of a cannabis plant, and when in combination with CBD, produce what we call the entourage effect.
Terpenes were used initially to ward off predators because of their skunk-like smell (“dank”). Now, however, studies are beginning to find that the benefits of terpenes extend far beyond their protective properties.
The entourage effect and Terpenes
Now that we have a brief understanding of what terpenes are, we can examine the existing evidence that suggests the entourage effect consists of terpenes and CBD interacting together to create desired effects for various needs.
It has been found that terpenes, when interacting with other compounds, such as CBD or THC, creates a synergistic effect that actually magnifies the effects both therapeutically and medicinally of CBD.
Synergies arise from various interactions of compounds, however, most commonly researched is the interaction between CBD and terpenes, otherwise referred to as the entourage effect.
Benefits of the Entourage Effect
A groundbreaking study came out in 2011, by Ethan Russo which confirms based on empirical evidence that there are in fact heightened medicinal benefits and clinical implications of the entourage effect. Specifically, the author summarizes the entourage effect with respect to it’s benefits in the following realms:
- Pain treatment
- Fungal and bacterial infections

Full Spectrum CBD and the Entourage Effect
Now, you may be thinking I know what the entourage effect is, but how can I make sure I get the entourage effect in the CBD I consume? The answer is simple: you must look for any product that is labelled “Full Spectrum CBD.”
This means that it contains multiple compounds ensuring that the terpenes and CBD interact, producing the entourage effect.
